Kalix & Travis Hamonic

Kalix started training at Explosive Edge when he was just 11 years old. When he was 14 he started helping coach the younger goalies in the camps at Explosive Edge. He continued to coach all the different programs over the years until he left to pursue other ventures in November of 2019. He inspired many kids throughout his coaching career at Explosive Edge. Although he was able to have the best trainers and opportunities in life, his 3 brothers at his moms house didn’t have the same opportunities. He would spend his spare time at the outdoor rinks helping, coaching, playing with his brothers, and even volunteered as a coach of both of his younger brother’s teams.

Before he moved to Vancouver to go help his uncle at his rebar company, he had talked to my wife, Betina and Kim Bergmen at Explosive Edge, about how he could help kids afford to go to Explosive Edge. When he left to Vancouver he told Chris Bergmen, owner of Explosive Edge, to keep his last check for a family who needed it.

Kalix was the best big brother, who really loved and watched over his siblings. He was always there when his friends needed him, and always tried to help those in need who didn’t ask. He was a stubborn strength, the rock, in the family. He was ready to give everything he had to help others in need. We love him so much, and when he left us too early, Kalix took a little piece of everyone’s soul with him.

We have continued to honour Kalix’s legacy and memory by turning his last pay check from Explosive Edge into the start of The Kalix Legacy Foundation. We will always be proud of the person he is and how he touched so many in the all too short life that he lived.

May his legacy live forever through the kids that are helped by this foundation!

The Kalix Legacy Foundation was created to honour Kalix Langenau’s dream of helping out financially challenged families cover the cost of program and training fees, as well as equipment costs, so that every child has the same opportunity that he had to participate in all sports programs offered right here in Airdrie. We also provide funding for kids who have lost a parent or sibling, because we know first hand about the mental and financial hardships faced during such unfortunate times.

The Legacy Foundation is a not-for–profit organization that is run by friends and family of Kalix Langenau. We have partnered up with East Side Sports to make this a reality.

We can cover anywhere from 50% to 100% of the fees and equipment costs depending on the program or training, the applicants financial situation and on funds available.

You can apply for funding on our website by clicking here. All applications will be reviewed by the executives and all information and names will be kept confidential.

We ask that all applicants apply for JumpStart, KidSport, and the Hockey Canada Grant before applying to the Legacy Foundation. This will help offset the costs and enable us to help more youth in Airdrie.

We encourage participants to use any sports equipment they already have, or to bring in their old equipment to East Side Sports when it does not fit anymore. East Side will then give us a credit and out fit the qualified applicant with some safe properly fit equipment. We try to use gently used, safe, clean equipment where ever possible.

All of our funding is raised through sponsorship, donations, and fund raising. We welcome anyone who would be interested in volunteering or setting up a fund raiser to contact us through the corresponding links.
